What to check before choosing a coating or other car protection

Film, ceramic coating or hydrophobic protection? Before you choose, work out what you want to protect, how you use the car and who prepares the paint. No marketing slogans.

Short answer

PPF protects against stones and scratches, a ceramic coating against chemicals, sun and dirt, and hydrophobic protection is a light option for a season. First decide which surfaces you want to protect and from what, then ask about paint preparation and aftercare. Only then compare prices.

First decide what you want to protect and from what

“Car protection” can mean different needs. One person wants to keep the paint clean more easily, another thinks of stone chips on the motorway, another wants to protect selected parts or the interior. Before comparing products, decide which surfaces matter and how you use the car.

There is no single solution for every car. Surface condition, earlier repairs, usage, parking and your willingness to care for it later all matter. Tell the studio about these instead of assuming the most expensive option is best. In our practice a car commuting daily on the S3 needs a different scope than a garaged weekend car.

Film, coating or both

PPF is the only protection that actually stops stone impacts and scuffs: a polyurethane layer about 200 microns thick takes them. A ceramic coating is a fraction of a micron thick, so it will not stop a stone, but it keeps colour depth, eases washing and protects against salt, bird droppings and UV. Hydrophobic protection is an even lighter layer, applied in a day, for a season.

The most common choice in our studio is a combination: film on the impact-prone panels, a coating over the whole car, including the film. A car protected this way washes in minutes and looks like handover day for years.

Ask about surface preparation

Before protection goes on, the surface needs preparation: washing, decontamination, often paint correction. Even a brand-new car has holograms from dealer prep that would stay under a coating for years. Ask which stages the offer includes and what their scope depends on.

Distinguish preparation from the protection itself. Two quotes may cover different stages even with a similar service name. Compare the list of work, the surfaces covered and whether the studio documents the car's condition with photos.

Check aftercare conditions and limits

Ask how to wash the car afterwards, when the first wash is allowed and what to avoid. The answer must come from the installer and the product manufacturer. No protection frees you from normal care, and a brush wash can ruin the result in one season.

Ask what declared durability means: whether it refers to a specific product, correct preparation, a certain use or servicing. If the offer includes a warranty, get its terms in writing: scope, exclusions, required inspections and how to make a claim.

The essentials

Choose protection after defining the goal, surfaces and usage. Check preparation, scope, limits, aftercare and warranty terms. Product and durability details should be confirmed by the studio for the specific solution, not by an advert.

Questions on this topic

No. A coating will not stop a stone. If the car does motorway miles, film on the front is the only protection against chips; a coating complements it on the rest of the car.
